Planting throughout the town
The People’s Project is responsible for planting in many areas of the town. We aim to use a diverse range of plants in order to create interest throughout the year. Wherever possible we use environmentally friendly gardening techniques and perennial planting which provide a pollinator pathway within the town.
Planters
We have provided and maintained planters in the following locations: – Devorgilla Bridge, Old Bridge House Museum, the Whitesands and Market Square. Our volunteers help to maintain the garden at the Adult Resource Centre in Dumfries.
We helped the Council gardeners to plant a perennial border at Galloway Street and we provided seating. One of our members researched the history of the area and designed interpretation boards.
We organised a seed and plant share at Dumfries town market where surplus seeds and plants were shared with the community. We are also working in partnership with The Midsteeple Quarter to create a recycle and reuse community garden in the town centre.
Fruit Trees
We provided 30 fruit trees to plant an orchard in the grounds of Dumfries Academy. Seating has been installed which is well used by the pupils, some of whom helped with the research for the interpretation boards which are located nearby.
Dumfries and Galloway Council and the People’s Project worked together to organise the planting of trees by school children in Dock Park, Dumfries. The People’s Project also provides hanging baskets which create a glorious display in The Vennel.
We are working in partnership with The Midsteeple Quarter to create a recycle and reuse community garden in the town centre.
Bulb Planting
The People’s Project are working on brightening up the entrances to the town. With this in mind, we have planted a total of 36,000 bulbs on the Annan Road, Lockerbie Road and Dalbeattie Road.
