Maxwelltown
Dumfries and Galloway has an amazing history and heritage, including close connections with Robert the Bruce, Robert Burns and JM Barrie. The People’s Project is trying to record this history and heritage for the people of the region and to share it with a wider audience. To do this, we have initially created a series of interpretation boards in Maxwelltown and Castledykes Park.
Old Bridge Museum
An interpretation board of the historic skyline of Dumfries has been installed at the the Old Bridge House Museum as part of a seated area overlooking the River Nith. The artwork was created by local artist Jo McSkimming.
Market Square
The two interpretation boards in Market Square which compare photos of yester year with today, evoke many memories. Our grateful thanks to the proud Maxwelltonians for sharing their memories to help keep their history and heritage alive.
Glasgow Street
The two interpretation boards at the corner of Galloway and Glasgow Streets record the history of Old Maxwelltown, especially the demolition of the many buildings and the creation of the dual carriageway in Glasgow Street in the 1960s. Other photos show Maxwelltown as a thriving, forward-thinking burgh before amalgamating with Dumfries in 1929.
